The Committee Against Utility Shutoffs holds demonstration in Detroit

The Committee Against Utility Shutoffs held a demonstration on March 12 to demand an end to utility shutoffs and insist that heat and lights are social rights.

The march, involving about 100 people, began at 8011 Dexter Avenue, the scene of a January 5, 2010 fire that took the lives of three people: Marvin Allen, 62; Tyrone Allen, 61; and Lynn Greer, 58. It ended at a meeting at the Dexter-Elmhurst center.

Lawrence Porter, chairman of CAUS, opened the event with a speech outlining the program of the demonstration. The event culminated at a public meeting that included comments and contributions from the participants.

CAUS holds press conference to announce March 12 demonstration

The Committee Against Utility Shutoffs (CAUS) held a press conference on Friday to announce plans for a March 12 demonstration against utility shutoffs. The event was held at the Dexter-Elmhurst center in Detroit, which is located in the same neighborhood where a house fire killed three people a little over a year ago after their utilities were shut off.

End all utility shutoffs! Electricity and gas must be social rights

The Committee Against Utility Shutoffs (CAUS) demands an end to all utility shutoffs. Those living without gas and electricity must have their services immediately restored.

Today’s “Energy Customer Assistance Day” has nothing to do with guaranteeing the basic right of all residents to gas and electricity. It is a public relations stunt by DTE and the city government.
